December 2008

Dear Gerry,

Peace on Earth: Creative Capitalism

As we near Christmas, many conflicting thoughts arise in me: family time, homeless people out in the cold, gift-giving, consumerism, what I teach my family, and how I run my business.

It occurred to me that the recent TIME Magazine article by Bill Gates provides a message of hope and as such might make a good Christmas Edition lead-in for this newsletter. This is especially interesting since Sector is a Microsoft trainer, and we are trying to create positive change in the world. We also teach innovation and creativity, and this article is entitled "creative capitalism".

I was inspired by this article when I read it in July, perhaps because it supports my beliefs so well. The fundamental message is that corporations can make a positive difference in the world economy and the human race. I'll paraphrase Bill Gates: "capitalism has done a great job for people who are well off. Can we apply these innovations to the poorest people?" He says that a company "doing well" does not rule out "doing good" and in fact these can support each other.

TIME interviews Gates in a short video (click
here) but I recommend the full article as a more thorough treatment of this topic.

With this message of hope, let's all Connect with Joy this holiday season, with everyone you meet and everything you do.

And here's to a peace-full 2009!
