February2011

Sector Learning Solutions Inc.

Building human capability to produce positive change in organizations and the world

white space
Sector: a Values-Based Business (vlog)

Jim Collin's book "Built to Last" discusses what great companies have in common, and a foundation of PURPOSE and VALUES came up over and over again.

Below is a 4 minute segment about Sector's values and how we use them every day.  We are very proud, and a bit silly...but mostly proud.

A Greener Sector: Open House 2011

At Sector Learning, We Like to Party Wise

We reduced our carbon footprint by choosing closer to home

We specifically chose the local artisan food platter to feed our guests, as well as a selection of local BC cabernet sauvignons, merlots, chardonnays, and pinot grigios from Prospect Winery, Naked Grape, and Copper Moon.

We saved paper, ink, and, of course, time!

Nancy Brown of Woodwynn Farms won the "Early Bird" RSVP prize at our Open House event. To save paper, ink and, of course, time, we used a formula to randomly select a name from the list of RSVPer's we tracked in an Excel spreadsheet.

Sound complicated?

See this month's Instructor Tip to learn how you can do the same!

This green initiative was brought to you by Veronica Rutherford.

Instructor's Tip

How to Create a Paperless Prize Draw using Excel

This tip shows you how to Randomly Select an Entry  from a List in

Microsoft Excel 2007/2010

1. Designate columns for each type of information.

(ie. Column A = first name, Column B = last name, Column C = company name, etc.)

2. Enter each person's  information across the row, into the approprite columns.

(ie. Column A = Joe, Column B = Smith, Column C = Sector Learning Solutions, etc.)

 3. Create a  new column and  populate that column with the formula =RAND() in each row.

5. Sort your data set by that column to randomly sort the list of names.

6. The name at the top of the list is the winner!

Note: A new name will appear at the top of the list each time you refresh or resort as the "RAND" formula will recalculate.
