Tips & News from Sector Learning Solutions

July 2008

Dear Gerry,

Grateful for Craziness

Wow! I have been so busy it's embarrassing! With solid growth, Business of the Year finalist, launching the Innovation Workshops, and working on selling our home, I've had little time for my wife, my kids, or myself...

Wow! Is my life ever rich! The first week of July, I will be with my family in Naramata with cherry juice running down my chin and the lake close at hand...

So, here's the contrast. Life is peaks and valleys, yin and yang. I wonder if I would appreciate my time away as much if I didn't work so hard in between...

Innovation Workshop - Local Launch Big Success

We launched our innovation Workshops on June 18th at the Holiday Inn and had leaders from the Chamber of Commerce, BC Government, local businesses, federal government, and UVic. Our goals of that event were to refine our delivery, and determine the local market need.

The participants provided great feedback and we are acting upon several recommendations. And several organizations have expressed interest in bringing this workshop in-house to their staff.

We will be ready to go for September with three Innovation offerings:

  • The one-day workshop as run last week with the VIEW™ assessment of problem solving style and all 10 Thinking Tools;
  • A two-day version which adds on a day of facilitated Innovation or Problem solving, on your specific issues or ideas, using the tools learned in Day 1.
  • A half-day VIEW-only workshop that focuses on the VIEW assessment, your team's results, and how to use that information.

We will be posting these courses to our website in August. If you would like to book a date in September, or sooner, please contact Gerry Brimacombe (gerry@sectorlearning.com; 250-727-2266).

Humour

It Depends on Your Point of View...

After my opening, this seems appropriate.

Professor Aude Oliva at MIT develops these interesting pictures that change magically...

When you look at this image, whose face do you see? At normal screen viewing distance you should see the face of the great scientist Albert Einstein. Now squint your eyes or take a few steps back from the image. Does a certain Hollywood personality pop into view? The Marilyn Einstein hybrid image was created by Dr. Aude Oliva for the March 31st 2007 issue of New Scientist magazine.

Does this prove that we sometimes may not be seeing what's actually there?

News & Announcements

Welcome Linda and Leslie
Linda Swanton has been a contract trainer for us for a good while, so you wouldn't have noticed that we recently convinced her to change her vagabond ways and join Sector as a full-time employee. We love you Linda!

And then there were six...Leslie Fischer has a long background in training hard- and soft-skills for the Military. As for her first two weeks as a Sector employee? "I'm having a great time!", says Leslie with a grin.

(Apparently, Shelley is fun to work with!)

New Air Conditioning

As you read this we are upgrading the air conditioning in both our classrooms, and installing blackout drapes to block out that lovely summer sun!

No August Newsletter

Watch for our September edition where we'll announce our 25th Anniversary Celebration. (Yes, Sector was founded in 1983, and it has been way too long since we held a party!)

Destination Imagination

One of my reasons for getting involved in the Innovation Workshops was the very cool Destination Imagination program for kids. (Also known as D.I.)

Faith Garriock, the DI leader for BC was in town last week and met with several Principals and local organizations. I made arrangements for her to meet with the principal at my daughter's school, Arbutus Middle School. My intention is to be the DI parent sponsor and the "coach" there. Apparently Faith also visited Frank Hobbs school, so maybe I will be "doing DI" at two schools!

If you want to explore Destination Imagination for your school, please see www.bcdi.org or contact Faith at bcdi@shaw.ca.

Purpose: We build human capability to produce positive change in organizations and the world.

Yours sincerely,

Gerry Brimacombe
