The Dynamic Sector Newsletter

Tips & News from Sector Learning Solutions

May 2008

Dear Gerry,

Welcome to "The Dynamic Sector 2.0"

We surveyed, you responded. You suggested, we listened. This newsletter is now restructured based on your collective requests. What surprised me is how much you wanted it to stay the same. The key differences you'll see are:

·         Office Tips & Tricks is a priority near the top.

·         It's brief.

One way we have shortened your newsletter is by creating a brief intro section in this email, and allowing you to click to open details on our website (for now we are using a simple SharePoint site, but plan to integrate into our website this summer). This opening section will be a link back to my new Blog (hoo-hah!).

An "Innovative" New Offering

We're getting creative! As mentioned in January's Dynamic Sector, we have discovered, and fallen in love with, a powerful program that teaches creative problem solving and improves innovation - the most important skill your organization can have in 21st century.

We need to do more with less, and the only way I know to do that is to create new ideas and put them to productive use. This new workshop will help you get there and leverage all your activities to be more effective!

And even better, this offering aligns with Sector's values and purpose:  every course delivery, we pay licensing and materials fees to the non-profit Destination Imagination - the world's largest creative problem solving program that has trained almost 20 million kids and continues to do great stuff (as an aside, I plan to introduce DI to our local schools as well).

These workshops work best when they are "dedicated" to your company, team, or department. However, in order to get some exposure we are having a Local Launch Event on June 18th where decision makers can experience the entire workshop for only $200 (lunch included) at the Holiday Inn in Victoria. This event is already filling up; so if you would like to attend, please register at the link below. And if you would like to schedule a dedicated session for your group, please call or email me, Gerry Brimacombe (gerry@sectorlearning.com).

Click here for workshop details, and to register for the June 18 Local Launch Event.

Get Down with Bubble Wrap

Bubble Wrap. What is it about this stuff? My kids (okay, and I) fight over who gets to pop it. Imagine my surprise when I was told that in clinical trials popping bubble wrap was shown to be an effective stress-reducer!

So, thanks to my friend Ron, here's a virtual version of popping bubble wrap. There is a small popping sound, so if you are at work, wait until break time, and plug your headphones into your computer so the neighbours don't hear
..and try to steal the bubble wrap! (And if they do try, just forward them this email!)

Customizing Office 2007 Status Bar

By Linda Swanton, Application Specialist

For most of you, Microsoft Office 2007 is just a few short months away, or you may have purchased a new computer at home, or updated to Office 07. You may have heard how different the User Interface is in Vista/2007 and are concerned about finding your favourite Office toys.

Well, what you have heard about the User Interface in 2007 is only somewhat true. It is visually a lot different, but only because the logic used in arranging the commands is different. Most everything is still there. It has simply been moved. Some things work differently (some a lot differently) and then there are some new things as well.

What I would like to do in these articles I have been asked to write is show you some of the quirks and advantages to working in Office 2007, and hopefully allay concerns you may have about the changeover.

Microsoft Word 2007 Status Bar

I was at the City of Langford this morning doing a "Walk About," helping the folks there with some of the issues they were having with Office 2007. One of the more interesting questions that came up was in regards to the information showing on the status bar in Word. The question was: where had the information on the Section breaks gone? Well, it is still there, but you have to set it up.

Business of the Year 2008

By Gerry Brimacombe

The big news this month is that Sector Learning Solutions was a finalist for the Business of the Year Award in the 1-10 employees category. Congratulations to Bill at GICdirect.com who edged us out to win this category.

This was a top-notch event sponsored by the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, and culminated in an Academy Awards style dinner on April 16th.

We are very pleased and very proud to be a finalist, and look out, Victoria, we're going to WIN next year!

Here's the list of winners.

Here are some photos of the awards ceremony.

ConstantContact Email Tools

In our Dynamic Sector survey, some of you said you liked the idea of receiving newsletters, but not special offers, or information on one topic and not another. Since we are using ConstantContact to develop and send our newsletter, this is easily done. Here's how...plus a few other tips to make sure your experience with these emails is positive.

1.       First of all, please note that the first thing you see in these mailing is, and always will be, the "safe unsubscribe" link. Click on that if you wish to not receive emails from us.

2.       Alternatively, if you only want emails on certain subject(s), click the "Update Profile/Email Address" link at the bottom of any email. This will bring you to a web page that allows you to check (or uncheck) boxes to select which email type you are interested in receiving.

3.       Use item 2 above to also update your name, email address, and other contact details.

4.       Many organizations are choosing ConstantContact to keep in touch with their clients. If you would like to try it free for 60 days, please click this link.

Purpose: We build human capability to produce positive change in organizations and the world.

Yours sincerely,

Gerry Brimacombe
