Tips & News from Sector Learning Solutions

September 2008

Dear Gerry,

Happy Silver Anniversary, Sector!

Do you remember when Sector was on Quadra Street? Did you know that we were founded in 1983? This is our 25th Anniversary!

It takes a lot for a company just to survive 25 years in Victoria. And Sector is thriving! This has been our best year on record including being a finalist for the Business of the Year and developing curriculum for the BC Government U2 project (potentially helping 34,000 new Office 2007 users).

So what's the secret of Sector's success? (Besides great alliteration?) I believe what matters most is listening to our clients and meeting their (your) needs. Sector has changed since 1983 because client needs have changed. And we will continue to grow for the next 25 years because your needs continue to grow.

I think it is also important to give back. Please see the "Unsung Heroes" article below and think of who you know who deserves this recognition.

We have some exciting announcements coming in the next few months, so please keep an eye on this space!

All the best.

Gerry Brimacombe

New Workshop on Problem Solving Style

We have been gaining traction with our 1-day Innovation and Creative Problem Solving workshops. And now we have a half-day option for busy teams who need quick improvement.

The VIEW-only workshop pivots around "VIEW: An Assessment of Problem Solving Style(tm)", a web-based assessment of your team's individual and collective problem solving style. By looking at your individual and collective results, we will excite discussion and provide practical recommendations on how to make the most of that style.

VIEW is a concise, easy-to-understand approach to assessing problem solving styles developed by the Center for Creative Learning (www.creativelearning.com). The VIEW instrument was created to assess style preferences when people are solving problems or managing change.

VIEW was developed, field-tested, and researched with more than 5,000 subjects ranging in age from 12 years through adult, and has since been used by more than 50,000 additional people in schools, church groups, and businesses throughout the world.

U2 Office 2007 Curriculum Development
We were very pleased to be selected to develop standard Upgrade 2.0 (U2) training materials for BC Government (WTS).

Pleased first because we knew we could do a great job of developing and training these important topics for all of Government.

And pleased to see the "human-focussed" approach taken by the U2 Team and Ministry U2 Leads. Making sure that Vista, Office 2007, and the Advanced Collaboration Tools are accepted, useable, and even embraced is critical to the goal of these tools increasing productivity for the (already busy) Public Service staff.

We have now delivered completed materials to the U2 Team, to be used by them or any trainer they choose. The courses are currently:
1. What's New in U2: 1 hour awareness seminar;
2. How-To for U2: 3 half-day hands-on modules:
     a. Module 1: Vista, Outlook and Internet Explorer;
     b. Module 2: Office 2007 and Beyond
     c. Module 3: Advanced Collaboration & Communication

If you would like us to train your people on the U2 tools, or customize curriculum for you, please contact
Shelley. (For further information on Upgrade 2.0, see https://wts.gov.bc.ca/upgrade2).

Course Books for Sale
We are selling off a few manuals - some for as little as $5.00! If you are interested, please contact Terri at 250-727-2266.

Looking for Instructors and Consultants
If you know of any instructors or curriculum developers who want full-time or part-time work, please have them send a resume to HR@sectorlearning.com

.

Air Conditioning...

is now fully functional and working beautifully in the classrooms. Thank you Foster Air!

Office Tips & Tricks

Using Microsoft OneNote 2007
By Linda Swanton, Application Specialist

OneNote is a Microsoft tool that is coming into its own as part of Office 2007.  Microsoft describes this versatile tool as "an electronic version of a paper notebook where you can write down notes, thoughts, ideas, scribbles, reminders, and all kinds of other information".

Storing information in OneNote is easy. Select a page in your Notebook (you can have several), click, and start typing. Or, using OneNote's clipping tool, select a section of a document, either on your computer or at a website, and OneNote automatically picks it up and drops it onto an open page, complete with a link to where the information originated. Then move and rearrange the information until you have it stored whatever way you want.

And when you need to find it again, OneNote's Search tool will find that phone number that you "wrote down" somewhere or that perfect terminology you saw in that advertisement you copied into you OneNote workbook. Yes, OneNote can search into audio notes and text in graphics.

And what if you receive a PDF or other read-only document and would like to comment on it and email it back? The process is simple:
1. In Adobe, open the file to be marked-up.

2. Select the Print... command.
3. From the drop down where you can choose the printer, choose Send to OneNote 2007. (see below)

Print to OneNote

4. Open OneNote 2007.
5. Start marking-up! This works best on a tablet, but any machine running OneNote can do basic mark-up.
6. (optional) File/Send to/Mail Recipient (as PDF Attachment)

And that's it! (Please note that we now offer OneNote classes)

Celebrating Victoria's Unsung Heroes

In January, I emceed a very special event: the first annual "Unsung Heroes" fundraiser. In 2009 brings the second annual and

again I am involved. As part of the planning committee I am helping to find the award recipient for the next award. Do you know someone who does great non-profit (Social Profit!) work and would like to raise awareness and an extra $5,000 for the charity of their choice? Please see below for details.
- Gerry

The Unsung Hero Award will be presented at a celebration dinner March 6, 2009, to a person within BC's Capital Region whose unusual service over time within a social profit setting reflects the above values. Funds raised through the sale of 100 tickets at $50 each are given to the social profit organization designated by the Unsung Hero.

The process for selecting the "unsung hero 2009"

Anyone living in the BC's Capital Region may be nominated for this award but no one can nominate him/herself. Each nominee will have a record of active involvement within a social-profit organization that will present evidence in support of their nominee. If the nominee is chosen for the award, the organization designated by the nominee will take part in planning the celebration. Each nominee needs at least three letters of support (including one from the designated organization) detailing the achievements that supporters believe qualifies the nominee for the award.

Please send us this nominations package

  1. From the nominator:

    -          a one-page statement by the nominator describing how the nominee is an "unsung hero" (as described on page one)

-          nominator contact information (contact person, phone, email, mailing address)

-             three letters of support from local agencies, institutions or businesses indicating how the nominee meets the criteria of an "unsung hero". One of these letters can be from the designated agency.

  1. From the nominee:

-          A signed statement acknowledging the nomination and naming the designated agency

  1. From the designated agency:

-          A letter stating willingness to participate in planning the celebration if the nominee is chosen for the "Unsung Heroes" award. The degree and manner of participation will be negotiated with the Planning Committee.

Please submit nominations packages by September 30th, 2008 to:

Unsung Heroes, c/o Community Council

3948 Quadra St, Victoria BC, V8X 1J6

or email to info@communitycouncil.ca

Questions may be directed to Christina Peacock (250.383.6166) or Mabel Jean Rawlins (250.656.0834).

Purpose: We build human capability to produce positive change in organizations and the world.

Yours sincerely,

Gerry Brimacombe
